The Jokhang Monastery is a Buddhist temple in the heart of the city and is easily the most important temple in Tibet. Hoards of people and pilgrims come to the site, so it is best to go in the early morning. Its beauty lies in its rich history and deep roots in Buddhist tradition.
Formerly the residence house of the Dalai Lama, this building is now a museum, and part of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites. The walk to the top makes for a good exercise, but the views are worth it. The atmosphere that is produced by the smell of the incense, the sound of soft chanting, and tinkling bells, and the darkness of the place is truly an experience of a lifetime. You can even see robed monks walk past once in a while, and even some cute cats frolicking along.
